I just sent the following spam to a huge chunk of my address book. As if that weren’t enough, I’m posting it on my blog, and then twittering about it. Guerrilla marketing Web 2.0-style, what? As I mention below, “…this is a big leap for me. It is time to cash in all my good internet citizen brownie points at once by simultaneously spamming, astroturfing, and sending a chain letter.”

A screen, a video, and a HOWTO Vote for Smashball guide below the break.

It is my pleasure to announce that Smashball, my game ‘side project’ for the past two years, entered the public beta phase in mid-December. In order to make it to the next level, we need more eyeballs.

We have been selected as one of the 100 finalists out of over 4000 projects in the Mod Of The Year 2008 competition. Ending up in the top 10 would get us a lot of exposure, a bump in the playerbase, some neat prizes, and another feather in our cap we can show to investors.

If you could take <5 minutes out of your busy schedules to register as a user and vote for Smashball in the contest, I’d be eternally grateful. To make it super extra easy, here’s how: 1) Go to http://www.moddb.com 2) At the top, it says “Hello guest register or sign in”. Click on ‘register’. 3) Fill out the form. You will supply e-mail, username, password, realname, country, birthday, gender. Leave the newsletter checkbox blank (unless you’re really interested) and click the Terms of Use Checkbox. 4) Click ‘Create my Account’ 5) Check your e-mail for a confirmation. Click the link in the e-mail to confirm your registration. 6) In the landing page, click ‘sign in’ at the top of the page. 7) Enter your username and password you selected in #3 above. 8) Once you are signed in, click this link, or paste it into your browser: http://www.moddb.com/mods/smashball 9) Click the big VOTE NOW button 10) In the “Best Released” section, click ‘Half-Life 2’ (NOT Half-Life), then scroll down and click the Smashball vote link. And you’re done. If you want to help me out even more, feel free to send this to big groups of your friends. If you have a gamer in your life that would like to check out the game, send them to http://www.smashball.tv. Sincerest thanks, Mike PS: If you’re receiving this e-mail, it’s because I know you. I’m sending this to nearly everyone in my address book that I’ve met or spoken with. Never before have I done this. Those of you who know me well understand that this is a big leap for me. It is time to cash in all my good internet citizen brownie points at once by simultaneously spamming, astroturfing, and sending a chain letter.
